Kathy Compton has taken her successful background as a chef and restaurant owner to canvas, using acrylic and collage as her primary medium. Kathy’s passion for color is evident in all her work. As a chef, she has a desire to combine vibrant color, texture, and form to create innovative dishes, sometimes most remarkable because of their simplicity. Kathy successfully translates her gift for these three elements onto her canvases.
When Kathy was a child, she cooked with her grandmother, observing and listening. Over time she took what she learned and, through creative trial and error, made it her own. The sound fundamentals of food, shot through with color and texture, were melded into the dishes she served in her two restaurants – Café Bouchee and 1910 Main, both in Forest Grove, Oregon. Kathy spent childhood summer afternoons running from the Forest Grove public pool to the craft store across the street. There Kathy would participate in whatever class was going on, learning materials and beginning to put together what would form her art. It wasn’t until 2016 that Kathy really began painting and combined her two passions –cooking and art – into vibrant works. After taking a collage workshop at Sitka, Kathy added that medium to her repertoire, using any texture of interest and adding stenciling for movement. In October, Kathy will return to Sitka to investigate abstract landscape. Kathy loves to travel and has recorded special moments in 5x7 watercolors that may, in time, become note cards!
Kathy and her husband, Don, live on wooded acreage above Gaston. Her vegetable and flower gardens are works of art, serving both her passion for food and painting. Kathy divides her time between their home in Gaston and Pacific City, where they built a beach home filled with light and color.
